Lara Wilson

Freelance choreographer

Lara Wilson is a choreographer and creative. Her upbringing outside of Detroit, MI, gave her opportunities to train at American Ballet Theatre summer intensives and with contemporary choreographers Peter Chu and Christopher Huggins. Lara went on to study at Jacob's Pillow, with Kazuko Hirabayashi and Take Ueyama in Spain, at the San Francisco Conservatory of Dance, and The Taylor School, where she both developed choreography and performed works by Ohad Naharin, Robert Battle, George Balanchine, Alex Ketley, and Paul Taylor. A 2009 graduate of the Ailey/Fordham BFA Program with a concentration in choreography, Lara showed work in New York and Los Angeles before joining forces with other Southern California-based dancers and dance makers to form the experimental, collaborative dance company, The Assembly, which she has directed since 2014. Lara's dances have appeared on screen nationally and internationally, including at the San Francisco Dance Film Festival and in Jerusalem during “From Jaffa to Agripas.” She has been an artist-in-residence at Yale University, Mana Contemporary, and The Muckenthaler Cultural Center. Lara is the creative director of the dance journal DIYdancer, and recently co-founded All Movement, a consultancy aimed at diversifying the commercial world.
